Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc. and Live Nation Inc. are close to a merger, people familiar with the matter said, in a deal that would consolidate two of the most powerful forces in the music industry under one roof. According to the Wall Street Journal, the combined company would be called Live Nation Ticketmaster, and would merge the world's biggest concert promoter with the world's dominant ticketing and artist-management company. The resulting firm would be able to manage everything from recorded music to ticket sales and tour sponsorship. It could package artists in new ways, for example, allowing corporations such as a cellphone provider to sponsor a concert tour and to sell an exclusive download of a song.

HOLLYWOOD - A federal appeals court gave Napster Inc. permission Wednesday to resume business over the Internet, overruling a lower court judge who had demanded more assurances on copyright protection. HOLLYWOOD - Sometimes taking a joke too far can cause harm. Just ask disc jockeys Kramer and Twitch of the Dallas hard-rock radio station KEGL-FM, who were fired Monday after reporting on their night show that teen heartthrobs Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were involved in a car accident. Police and fire officials in Los Angeles were bombarded with phone calls from distraught fans on the night of June 12 and into the morning of June 13 wanting to know whether the accident had killed Spears and left her beau, 'N Sync's Timberlake, comatose. The disc jockeys, whose real names are Keith Kramer and Tony Longo admitted later that the report was a hoax.
