MIAMI, FL — “Holy Crap its hot here!” said bassist Robby Takac as the Goo Goo Dolls took the stage last Saturday for what would be the band’s first live performance in Miami of the past 10 years. The band played to a sold-out audience during their current summer tour as they prepare to release their ninth studio album, Something For The Rest Of Us out on August 31st.
The excruciating heat But the disgusting heat didn’t get in the way of hundreds of people to sing along and enjoy their 25-song set list, particularly the hits everyone has grown to love, such as “Iris”, “Slide” and “Name.” Although those are the songs that most people came to the show to hear, it was really refreshing to see that the band chose “The Sweetest Lie” off the new record as the first song off their set list.
Playing 25 songs, the most I have ever seen them play live, the Goo Goo Dolls gave it their all, song after next. If the fans wanted to hear the current songs, they sang them. If they wanted to hear the old hits, they played them. Singer/guitarist John Rzenik was a delight, interacting with fans and telling them how much he enjoyed playing in the city again.
Takac sang the fan favorites “Another Second Time Around” and “Smash” and although people don’t really recognize his songs, it is really nice to hear him sing during live shows. He puts so much energy to his songs, and he is always smiling. People should really appreciate Takac singing during those shows as his energy is contagious. I just wish he’d have the opportunity to sing more of his tracks during live shows.
One must say, hearing the new songs before the album is out really gave a feel of what this record is all about.
Old favorites such as “Big Machine” and “Here Is Gone” had the audience singing so loud Rzeznik didn’t even have to bother singing the song. It doesn’t matter that the song is 10 years old, the audience still sings it like its atop the music charts. It was really nice to hear everyone singing along word for word.
“As I Am” is an amazing song live and from what I understand is about a man who lost his job and is greatful to have his family at home loving him despite his situation. However, the one highlight that I’d like to point out for other fans attending the shows this summer, is the new song “Not Broken.” I cannot tell you how amazing this song is live. I had only heard this song as a sample online and hearing it live is a complete different story. It is one song guaranteed to give you chills. As a friend recently told me, this song is for sure going to be “epic” when the new album comes out.
If you have never seen the Goo Goo Dolls play live, or if you have seen them in the past, please don’t waste the opportunity to see them once again. You will hear some old favorites that have been playing in the radio for years but are also guaranteed to preview the new songs from a band who truly knows how to make one hit after the other. You will leave with a big grin on your face after seeing them perform. Guaranteed.
