Motley Crue – PNC Center – Holmdel, NJ 8-23-08

Holmdel, NJ – Upon arrival at the venue, In lieu of seeing Trapt, the first band, we purchased tee-shirts and got decent lawn seats during the set-up for Sixx AM. We wound up chillin’ on the right side, on the level of the 300 seats, which isn’t too bad of a view.

Sixx AM, Nikki Sixx’s side band, wasn’t too bad! Nikki didn’t seem too into it and he kept disappearing backstage after each song, but whatever. I was very entertained and that was that.

Papa Roach. Alright, fine, I’ll begrudgingly admit that as much as I can’t stand Papa Roach, Jacoby Shaddix is a fine frontman. He had all the characteristics and qualities that I’d want in my lead singer – if the music was better, maybe I’d be a fan. But I have to hand it to the band – they had a lot of energy and were definitely better than when I saw them in 2004 (they were on the bill with Velvet Revolver and Korn, among others).

BUCKCHERRY. Yes yes yes! I saw them in March 2007 and I was so stoked to see them again. Their set was short and my only gripe besides that was instead of extending “Crazy Bitch” to way-too-lengthy proportions, they could have squeezed another song in. But that was so minimal. Josh Todd really had the audience of 16,000 in the palm of his bony, tattooed hand and the response for them was so great (as it was for Sixx AM and Papa Roach). Cat definitely loved them, too!

MOTLEY CRUE! OOOOH boy. They hit the stage around 9:25 and I nearly peed myself with excitement. There is NOTHING like a f*cking SOLID Motley Crue show, so here’s the setlist – I’ll point out weaknesses, as it wasn’t totally perfect.

Kickstart My Heart
Wildside
Shout at the Devil
Saints Of Los Angeles
Mick Mars solo (he played some of “Voodoo Child” with Tommy’s accompaniment!)
Live Wire
Sick Love Song
Tommy’s Jager/Titty Cam (he tried to get some, like, 80 year old lady to flash everyone but she revealed her shoulder instead)
Mutherfucker Of The Year
Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)
Same Old Situation
Primal Scream
Looks That Kill
Girls Girls Girls
Dr. Feelgood
—-
Home Sweet Home

Let me just say this – the entire band looked like they were having FUN and it really projected into the audience. New Jersey LOVED Motley Crue and their appreciation for our love was never-ending, especially from Tommy. He even pointed out that as their tour bus passed through the parking lot, he saw everyone’s trunks open and totally loved how they were tailgaiting.

It’s obviously planned, but I loved how Josh Todd and Jacoby joined Vince on “Saints of Los Angeles.” Their pyro was PHENOMENAL… I haven’t been to a pyro-filled concert since last year’s Poison concert. I honestly wish I could have heard more (“Too Fast For Love” or “Ten Seconds To Love” or even “Red Hot”) but I was wholly satisfied. Vince was ON. Nikki was… banging ON his bass… not really playing. Mick was a BEAST.

I was just very happy with the show – my aching tailbone doesn’t even faze me (well, yours would hurt too if you were sitting on the lawn for six hours!) and I’m tired, but for all good reasons. It was a GREAT f*cking time, so thank you Motley Crue. I cannot wait for Part Two!
