ANAHEIM, CA — We got to the Anaheim pond at 4pm and got our tickets and laminates and hung out in the VIP room the Velvet Revolver Fan Club had for us for a little bit. They had some food and wine, beer and water for everyone. There must have been about 80 people there, it was pretty packed. They kept playing “Contraband” over and over again while people chatted and hung out until our tour guide got the radio call that we could go down to soundcheck. We walk down to the stage and line up against the barracade and Duff, Slash, and Dave were hanging out. Duff said hello to everyone and said they were gonna do a couple songs for us. Scott never went to souncheck and Matt didn’t show up till the very end because he was filming a part of the video that they did for the Tsumanim relief project.
They played “Big Machine,” “Sucker Train Blues,” and to my biggest surprise “Used to Love Her,” which blew me away. We weren’t allowed to take pictures but people were using camera phones so I took some from my phone.
After soundcheck Slash got on the mic and said “Sorry Matt was only here for the last song, but we did that Eric Clapton song…you know that song…Tears in Heaven or whatever? We recorded that song with a bunch of people and we’re shooting the video for it so it should be out soon for the Tsunami Relief” Everyone cheered and one guy goes “Slash you are my hero” and Slash just looked at him and smiled all embarrassed.
The show rocked and I was very happy to have gotten front seats. Unfortunately I had to sit through Hoobastank (I really dislike them, so by the time VR came on, I was ready to get the party started. VR played the entire album and did “Used To Love Her” and “Mr. Brownstone” by GN’R and “Sex Type Thing” by STP.
Scott was on something last night. I feel bad saying it seeing he’s trying to clean up but he was insane, saying stuff that didnt make sense, or not even singing the right words. I love him dearly though. He even crowd surfed and Duff had to come and lean over and give him a hand to get him back up onstage. He kept talking over and over how much he hated labels, all types of labels, but he specially had a problem with record labels. He went on and on with that for a WHILE.
He then said the coolest thing: “You can find rock at fucking McDonals, but you can’t find rock and roll anywhere else that easy, because we are true rock and fucking roll.” He talked about how music is the best there is, when music is attached to memories and make the hair on the back of your neck stand out. When he said that, I got chills because for that minute, I swear I felt like someone finally understood what music is all about.
