“If you want to meet girls, learn how to play the guitar“ – Ted Nugent
The rock group Everclear’s song “Rock Star,” - also the theme song for the upcoming film of the same name - perfectly describes what every wannabe rock star dreams of. “I want to be on TV shows, and wear designer clothes. I want a girlfriend who does not drink beer, and sleep with certain movie stars.”
And speaking of that last quote, many, many movie actresses, TV stars and models have fallen for the biggest names in music. Some couples still live to thell their fairy tale, while others crashed and burned - both in the public’s eye.
This is not to say musicians don’t deserve happy relationships, but most of them may not have even gotten a second glance from Hollywood knockouts if it weren’t for their record contracts.
What follows is a Who’s Who list of rock stars who somehow managed to sing and dance their way into the hearts of Hollywood’s leading stars, and the (sometimes disastrous) results of these relationships.
Couple: Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) & Heather Locklear (Spin City)
Relationship vitals: Married on December 17th, 1994 in Paris; Daughter, Ava Elizabeth, born October 4th, 1997.
The mating dance: According to Locklear herself, on the VH1 show Behind the Music, she asked a friend to introduce the couple. After making a few calls and getting no response, Locklear went to the hotel where Bon Jovi was staying during one of their tour dates in New York where she professed her love for him.
Why they’re still together: Locklear, 40, told USA Weekend magazine last year, that she’s particularly appreciative of her current home life after her first marriage to Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee failed. “You have to have a bad one to appreciate a good one.”
Will they last another year? Sure, why not?
Couple: Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) & Pamela Anderson (Baywatch)
Relationship vitals: Married on February 1995; Anderson filed for divorce November 19, 1996; Renewed wedding vows Dec. 24, 1996; Anderson filed assault charges on February 1998; Lee released from jail in September 1998; Reconciled 1999; Separated 2000; Sons, Brendan Thomas, 5 and Dylan Jagger, 4.
The mating dance: After carrying a long list of former lovers under her belt, this Playboy centerfold pinup married Lee only four days after they met in Hawaii. They even got “laid” at their wedding reception.
Why it didn’t work:: “It makes me cringe when I hear that I beat my wife,” Lee tells Rolling Stone magazine. “I’m like, ‘Oh, my God no. That’s not f—in’ true.’ I grabbed her, I shook her — which is wrong, I’m not saying that’s right — but for God’s sake, I never hit her. I would never hit Pamela ever. They just use the word for domestic violence — beating — not knowing the parameters. And you’re like, ‘I’m a f—in’ wife-beater? That’s f—in’ crazy!’”
Will they get back together? Maybe when the two reunite for a second honeymoon… home video included, of course.
Couple: Chris Robinson (Black Crowes) & Kate Hudson ( Almost Famous)
Relationship vitals: Married on December 31, 2000 in Aspen, Col.
The mating dance: Kate Hudson, 21, might have forgotten to snap out of her Penny Lane character when she married Robinson, 34, on the spur-of-the moment at her family ranch in Aspen.
Why they’re still together: “Married life is wonderful,” Hudson told The Sydney Morning Herald in January. “I never thought that I would find my husband this early in my life, but I did, and it’s kind of amazing.”
Will they last another year? Yes. They are the only couple that can make a hippie lifestyle look trendy in the Twenty-first century.
Couple: Jennifer Lopez (Angel Eyes) and Sean “Puffy” Combs
Relationship vitals: Dated from 1998 to February 2001
The mating dance: Lopez gave the “we’re just close friends” line until both started showing up to gala events hand-in-hand.
Why it didn’t work: “I was born a romantic. I operate from the heart–that’s who I am,” Lopez tells Britain’s In Style magazine about her failed relationship with Combs. “Love is a big inspiration in my singing, in my acting, and in my dancing. I believe in unconditional love.”
Will they get back together? No. Puffy doesn’t shake his bom bom quite as well as Lopez’ new fiance, choreographer/dancer Cris Judd.
Couple: Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) & Carmen Electra (Baywatch)
Relationship vitals: The couple got engaged on Aug. 14, 2001
The mating dance: Maybe its Navarro’s slick guitar playing that caught the attention of this supermodel beauty, plus he dresses better than Carmen’s ex, Dennis Rodman.
Why they’re still together: “I have other goals, and one of those goals is to raise a family, you know?” Navarro told Launch about his desire to settle down. “I know what it’s like not to have a family and I know what it’s like to be locked in a studio for months at a time, but that’s something that I don’t know about. I think what’s exciting to me right now are things that I don’t know about.”
Will they last another year? Doubtful. Carmen’s men never last long.
Couple: Marilyn Manson & Rose McGowan (Jawbreaker)
Relationship vitals: Met 1998; Engaged February 12, 1999; Ended January 2001
The mating dance: McGowan looked within her sinister-self and found the anti-Christ superstar quite a charmer.
Will they get back together? Only if Manson begins wearing his own makeup.
Why it didn’t work: “There is great love, but our lifestyle difference is, unfortunately, even greater,” McGowan said in a brief statement in January.
Will they get back together? Only if Manson begins wearing his own makeup.
Couple: John Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls) & Adrienne Frantz (The Bold and the Beautiful)
Relationship vitals: Dating since April 2000
The mating dance: Frantz asked a mutual friend to introduce her to Rzeznik after a Goo Goo Dolls concert in Los Angeles.
Why they’re still together: “I like to keep my personal life very personal…I have my life and he has his life and I just like to keep it private,” Frantz said in a recent interview.
Will they last another year? Rzeznik’s got the talent and the looks. Frantz wouldn’t want to give that up, would she?
Couple: Axl Rose (Guns n’ Roses) and Stephanie Seymour (supermodel)
Relationship vitals: Dated from February 1992 to October 1993.
The mating dance: Seymour dropped actor Warren Beaty for the scratchy-voiced singer; maybe his spandex shorts caught her eye.
Why it didn’t work: Victoria Secret supermodel filed charges of physical abuse against the singer.
Will they get back together?: Only if the band needs another sequel to their videos “Don’t Cry,” and “November Rain,” both of which she “starred” in.
Couple: Billy Joel & Christie Brinkley (National Lampoon’s Vacation)
Relationship vitals: Started dating in 1983; married in 1985; separated in late 1993; divorced in early 1994; Daughter Alexa Ray Joel, 19.
The mating dance: The musician fell in love with her after he met her in St. Bart’s, where she was on a photo shoot for a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
Why it didn’t work: Joel was never home after he began touring and recording incessantly.
Will they get back together? No. Not even if Brinkley says she’ll be his downtown girl. Besides, she’s already remarried a couple times since then.
Couple: Lyle Lovett & Julia Roberts (Erin Brockovich)
Relationship Vitals: Married on June 25, 1993; divorced on March 12, 1995.
The Mating Dance: They mey on the set for the 1992 Robert Altman film The Player where Lovett starred as Detective DeLongpre.
Why it didn’t work: The publicity surrounding the marriage drew more press attention toward Lyle Lovett than anything he had done in his musical career.
Will they get back together? Roberts traded up from Lovett to Bratt. And although single again, she’s not about to trade back down.
Couple: Heidi Klum (model/actress) and Seal (singer)
Relationship Vitals: Five months along in her pregnancy, Heidi and Seal were married on May 10, 2005 near beautiful Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
The Mating Dance: The singer flew the Victoria’s Secret model to an igloo perched on a 14,000 ft. glacier to ask for her hand in marriage just two days before Christmas.
Why they’re still together: Any guy that proposed at the top of a 14,000 ft. glacier deserves the time and effort.
Will they last another year? It has only been two weeks, give them a break, I’m sure they will last at least one year.
